White Throated Sparrow, Zonotrichia albicollis

White Throated Sparrows are mainly winter residents (October to May) residents of the North Carolina Piedmont, although some non-breeding individuals may remain over the summer. They tend to "hang" low on or close to the ground. The name Zonotrichia is from Ancient Greek zone, "band", and thrix, trikhos, "hair". The specific albicollis is from Latin albus, white, and collum, "neck".
